The trophy awarded to
the winning team of each Super Bowl was originally called the World
Championship Trophy. It was later called the Lombardi Trophy, named
after Vince Lombardi, and NFL legend.
There are actually two Lombardi Trophies at each Super Bowl game.
One is a back up in case the one presented to the team is destroyed
during the celebration.
It will be a clash of epic proportions when the two best teams in
the NFL square off for Super Bowl XLIV on Sunday, February 7, 2010
at the Land Shark (formerly Dolphin) stadium in Miami, Florida this
year. Kick-off time will approximately 6:28 pm on the East Coast;
5:28 pm Central; 4:28 pm Mountain; and 3:28 pm Pacific.

Announcers Jim Nantz and Phil Simms
will be hosting the game. This will be the fifth time the Super Bowl
will have been held at Dolphin Stadium, and the tenth in the history
of South Florida . Dolphin Stadium, which is actually called
Landshark Stadium prior to the game, is the old name of the stadium,
but due to previous naming right contracts, for all intensive
purposes Landshark Stadium will now be called Sun Life Stadium.
A five-year naming rights agreement
with Toronto-based Sun Life Financial was confirmed. The deal is for
at least $4 million a year and perhaps more, depending on postseason
success for the Dolphins and Florida Marlins, the stadium's baseball
tenant through next year.
Sun Life Stadium, which is host to this Super Bowl XLIV (44) and the
2010 Pro Bowl, also has 2 massive High Definition TV monitors at
either end of the stadium and a High Definition media strip lining
the entire inside of the stadium.
Sun Life Stadium, formerly known as Land Shark Stadium, Joe Robbie
Stadium, Pro Player Park, Pro Player Stadium, Dolphins Stadium and
Dolphin Stadium, is located one mile south of the Dade-Broward
county line and sits on a 160-acre site. It is 16 miles northwest of
downtown Miami and 18 miles south of Ft. Lauderdale.
Sun Life Stadium prides itself on the prescription Athletic Turf
(natural grass) making up the playing surface. It was designed with
mechanical drainage capability and provides a firm playing surface
within 30 minutes of a 1" per hour of rain.
Over the years the Super Bowl has more than lived up to the hype
with some amazing play on the gridiron. How can anyone forget Joe
Montana’s last minute drive to capture Superbowl XXIII or Tennessee
Titans receiver Kevin Dyson coming up a yard short in Super Bowl
XXXIV, giving the title to the St. Louis Rams. Then there is Joe
Namath’s remarkable upset with the Jets beating the Colts in
Superbowl III, and fans of the kicking game will never forget Scott
Norwood’s kick going wide right in Super Bowl XXV or Adam
Vinatieri’s kick with seven seconds left to give the Patriots
another Superbowl title.
